Constructed in 1923 for £30,000, this structure marked the first purpose-built Commonwealth Bank in Townsville, designed by Sydney architects John and Herwald Kirkpatrick.
The building represents the expansion of federal banking services in Australia, following the Commonwealth Bank Act 1911 that established the nation's first government-backed financial institution.
Located at 272-278 Flinders Street, the building served as a bank until 1977 and later functioned as the Townsville City Council Library until 2003.
The building employed pioneering reinforced concrete construction techniques, making it among the earliest examples of this architectural method in Townsville.
