Victoria Bridge, Townsville, Heritage footbridge in Townsville, Australia
Victoria Bridge spans Ross Creek with a steel structure featuring metal girders and wooden decking along Stokes Street in central Townsville. The pedestrian crossing connects the central business district to South Townsville and incorporates shops into its framework.
The bridge opened on July 2, 1889, as one of only two steel swing bridges built in Australia for vehicle traffic. Vehicle operations ceased in 1975 when the structure was converted for pedestrian use only.
The bridge serves as a gathering point where residents move between different parts of the city while it preserves 19th century construction methods. Pedestrians use it today to cross between the central business district and South Townsville.
The bridge provides a direct walking route between two areas of the city with straightforward pathways for pedestrians. Visitors should be aware that the structure is narrow and can become crowded during peak times.
A gas-powered engine once operated the rotating mechanism at the bridge's center, allowing ships to pass through the waterway. This system remained in use until 1924 when the swing function was no longer needed.
