Townsville Post Office, Heritage-listed postal building in Flinders Street, Townsville, Australia.
Townsville Post Office is a two-story brick building at the corner of Flinders Street featuring Renaissance design elements, a loggia, covered verandah, and a striking clock tower. The structure displays fine craftsmanship with ornamental details throughout its facade and architectural features.
Designed by Colonial Architect J J Clark, the building was constructed in stages between 1886 and 1889. During World War II, concerns about bombing led to the dismantling of the original clock tower, which was later restored.
For many years, this building served as the social hub of Townsville where residents gathered for news and community conversation. Its role in connecting people remains evident in how locals still recall it as a landmark of their city.
Today the building houses a working brewery with dining facilities occupying the ground and upper floors. Visitors can explore the interior architecture while enjoying food and locally made beverages.
The original clock tower was dismantled during World War II over bombing fears, and its mechanism sat in storage for years before returning to operation. Few visitors realize this hidden chapter in the building's past shaped its appearance today.
