Innisfail, Agricultural town in Cassowary Coast Region, Australia
Innisfail lies at the junction of the North and South Johnstone Rivers, about 70 kilometers south of Cairns. Sugar cane and banana plantations surround the town and define its rural setting.
The settlement was founded in 1872 by survivors of the Maria shipwreck. The name changed from Geraldton to Innisfail in 1910 to avoid confusion with other towns in postal services.
The town displays its multicultural past through riverside artworks with inscriptions in different languages. These engravings reflect the lasting influence of Italian, Chinese, and Indigenous communities that shaped the place.
The I-VAN information center at Anzac Memorial Park is open on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Saturdays until 1:00 PM. Staff there can provide guidance and maps for exploring the town.
After a devastating cyclone in 1918, the town was rebuilt with many Art Deco buildings. This architectural collection gives the center an unusual historical look that catches visitors' attention.
