Hope Islands National Park

Hope Islands National Park consists of four islands with coral reefs, mangrove forests, and sandy beaches spread across a protected marine area in Cook Shire. The island group creates a mix of different habitats where rock formations, plants, and sea creatures form an interconnected system.

Lieutenant James Cook named these islands in 1770 after his ship HMS Endeavour sought shelter there. The name marks an important moment in European exploration of Australia's coast.

The islands hold deep meaning for local Indigenous communities who have fished and traveled these waters for thousands of years. This long relationship with the sea shapes how people in the region view and use the marine environment today.

Reaching the park requires a private boat or a commercial tour operator from a nearby coastal town. Visit timing depends on weather conditions, as sea conditions vary with the season.
