Kounionomboué

Kounionomboué is a summit in New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the South Pacific. The climb passes through different vegetation zones that reflect the geological character of the island landscape.

The summit served local communities for long as an orientation point in the landscape. During French colonization in the 19th century, this location was incorporated into European mapping systems.

The summit area holds significance for the Kanak people, who maintain connections to the land through traditional practices and knowledge passed through generations.

The location is easiest to reach during the dry season, when the paths are more passable. Early morning hours offer the best conditions for photography and nature observation.

This location is home to plant species found nowhere else on Earth. The biological diversity in this area represents an important natural laboratory for understanding island evolution.
