Nauru, Island nation in Central Pacific.

Nauru is a circular landmass in the Pacific Ocean with a narrow coastal strip surrounding a central plateau that has been profoundly altered by decades of phosphate extraction. The mining activity left behind jagged limestone pinnacles and a heavily reshaped inland landscape.

Micronesian seafarers settled on the island at least 3,000 years ago, before European whalers arrived in the 19th century. German colonial administration began in 1888 and was replaced by Australian control during World War I.

Traditional music and dance remain central to local identity, with each tribe preserving distinct songs and ceremonial practices passed orally through generations. These performances take place during important community gatherings and show the connection to inherited forms of expression.

Weekly flights operate from Brisbane, and visitors should book accommodation well in advance due to limited hotel options. Drinking water comes from desalination and should be used conservatively.

The country has no capital city in the traditional sense, with government offices distributed across different districts and parliament meeting in Yaren. This district was not officially designated as the capital.
