Yaren District

Yaren District is located in the south of Nauru and serves as the main administrative center of the island with Parliament House, schools, and university facilities. The area sits on a gently elevated coastal zone and still shows traces from World War II.

This district was originally called Makwa and received the name Yaren in 1968 when Nauru became independent. The name change marked the start of self-rule for the Pacific island nation.

The Naoero Museum here displays objects and documents that show how life developed on this island over time. Visitors can see traditional items and understand what mattered to the people who lived here.
