Abaiang, Coral atoll in Gilbert Islands, Kiribati.

The atoll consists of six coral islands surrounding a central lagoon measuring 26 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide.

Captain Thomas Gilbert discovered the atoll in 1788, naming it Matthew's Island after the owner of his vessel, the Charlotte.

American missionary Hiram Bingham established the first Christian mission on the atoll in 1857, initiating religious transformation among local communities.

The administrative center of Tuarabu connects multiple villages across the atoll, supporting local fishing operations and copra production activities.

The village of Tebunginako experienced complete relocation due to coastal erosion, demonstrating early impacts of rising sea levels.

Cultural venues present maritime traditions, local crafts, and historical artifacts of the Gilbert Islands.
