Nauru Regional Processing Centre, Immigration detention facility in Meneng District, Nauru
The Nauru Regional Processing Centre is a facility for housing asylum seekers in Meneng District on the Pacific island of Nauru. The compound includes multiple buildings spread across a larger area in the southern part of the island, managed jointly by Nauruan and Australian authorities.
The facility began operations in 2001 as part of Australian immigration policy and was temporarily closed between 2008 and 2012. After reopening in 2012, it became a permanent component of the Australian asylum system.
The center represents a complex intersection of Australian immigration policies, international refugee rights, and Nauruan economic development needs in the Pacific region.
Access to the site is strictly controlled and permitted only with special authorization. Journalists and other visitors must apply for visas in advance, which can involve considerable fees.
The facility reached its maximum capacity of 1,233 detainees in 2014, leading to significant infrastructure expansions and operational changes.
