Kukum Field

Kukum Field was an airfield with a coral-surfaced runway built to support military aircraft during World War II. The site was flat and open, situated on the coast of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.

Construction began in 1942 and finished in early 1943 to serve as a fighter base. After the war, operations ceased and the military infrastructure was gradually removed.

The airfield transformed into a golf course after the war, showing how locals converted a military zone into a recreational space. Visitors today can observe this shift in the open, flat landscape that still bears traces of its wartime past.

The site is open to the public today and lies near Honiara, where you will find various accommodations and services. The best time to visit is during the drier months, and you should prepare for hot and humid weather.

Both American and New Zealand air forces operated from this location, making it a multinational military hub. This international cooperation was typical of Pacific operations during the war.
