Kukum Field, World War II airfield in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands
The coral-surfaced runway of Kukum Field extended 4,000 feet in length and 150 feet in width, supporting military aircraft operations during World War II.
The 6th Naval Construction Battalion began developing this fighter strip at Lunga Point in November 1942, with completion by First Marine Aviation Engineers in January 1943.
The transformation of Kukum Field into the Honiara Golf Course represents the shift from military infrastructure to recreational facilities in the Solomon Islands.
Multiple fuel storage tanks at Kukum Field contained millions of gallons of aviation fuel and diesel oil for supporting continuous flight operations.
Both the United States Army Air Forces and Royal New Zealand Air Force units operated from this strategic Pacific location until its closure in 1969.
