Mbonege Beach Shipwreck, World War II shipwreck site at Mbonege Beach, Solomon Islands.

Mbonege Beach Shipwreck in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, is the resting place of the Japanese cargo ship Kinugawa Maru. Its corroded hull lies partially submerged, with sections visible above water and others accessible below the surface.

Allied forces attacked a Japanese convoy near Guadalcanal in November 1942, forcing several cargo vessels to run aground at Mbonege. This clash marked a turning point in naval operations across the Solomon Islands.

Local people here connect visitors to the wartime events through personal stories and memories passed down through generations. For them, these remains represent a living link to their island's past.

The beach is best explored during low tide when more of the wreck becomes visible above water. Bringing snorkeling gear allows visitors to investigate the submerged portions throughout the day.

The corroded hull now functions as an artificial reef, supporting marine ecosystems that have colonized its metal surfaces. Over decades, corals and fish have transformed the remnants of war into a living habitat.
