Outrigger Canoe Club Beach, Private beach club in Waikiki, United States
Outrigger Canoe Club Beach is a private sandy shoreline in Waikiki fronting the Pacific Ocean with dedicated facilities for water sports. The site features changing rooms, equipment storage, and designated launching areas specifically designed for canoe operations.
The club was founded in 1908 by Alexander Hume Ford and local businessmen with the goal of preserving traditional Hawaiian water sports. Over the following decades, it became a center for outrigger canoe racing and training in the Pacific.
The beach remains a working space where outrigger canoe paddling continues as a living practice rooted in ancient Polynesian traditions. Visitors can observe the paddling community gathering regularly to train and compete on the water.
Access is limited to club members and their guests, with operations running from sunrise to sunset throughout the year. It is best to check in advance if visiting, as entry is restricted to those with club affiliation.
Every July 4th, the Walter J. Macfarlane Memorial Regatta takes place here, one of the longest-running outrigger canoe races in existence. This annual event draws paddlers from across the region and maintains a racing tradition spanning over a century.
