Honolulu Zoo, Zoo in Waikiki, United States.
Honolulu Zoo is a zoological garden at the base of Diamond Head in Waikiki, showing more than 220 animal species from tropical and African habitats. The grounds cover about 42 acres with different themed sections, including an African savanna complex and an area for primates and reptiles.
The park grew from a small animal collection in Kapiolani Park that began in the early 20th century and officially opened in 1947. Over the following decades it expanded into a larger zoological garden with themed enclosures and conservation programs.
The zoo features educational programs about Hawaiian native species and Pacific wildlife conservation, connecting visitors with local environmental preservation efforts.
The entrance sits about a 15-minute walk from Waikiki Beach and the grounds are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. On hot days, shaded sections between enclosures offer relief, and most visits take two to three hours to complete.
Peacocks roam freely among visitors and nest in trees along the paths. These birds have been part of the landscape for decades, sharing space with native Hawaiian plants.
