Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet Headquarters

Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet Headquarters is a three-story reinforced concrete building measuring roughly 60 by 200 feet with covered outdoor porches on the upper floors. A reinforced lower level was designed to withstand bombing.

Built in the 1940s, the building served as the command center where Admiral Chester Nimitz coordinated naval operations across the entire Pacific Ocean during World War II. From this location, Nimitz oversaw major naval battles from Midway to the Mariana Islands.

The building shows how military designers in the 1940s balanced safety with usable space, pairing heavy concrete with wooden frame construction on upper levels. This approach to building still defines its appearance today.

The site sits at the intersection of Halawa and Makalapa Drives within Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam as an active military facility. Access and viewing may be limited since it remains a working military installation.

The building received National Historic Landmark status in 1987 for its critical role in coordinating naval operations across the entire Pacific region during the war. This recognition honors its importance to military strategy across one of history's largest campaigns.
