Haleiwa, Historic coastal town on North Shore of Oahu, United States

Haleiwa is a coastal town on the north shore of Oahu with two beach parks near a small boat harbor where fishing and surfing are centered. The location sits between green ridges and ocean waters, serving as a working waterfront community with roads leading to both parks.

The town began in 1898 when Benjamin Dillingham opened a hotel and built a railway line from Honolulu to connect the region to the capital. This railroad made the harbor a stopping point and brought growth to what had been a quiet spot.

The name means House of the Elder in Hawaiian, and walking through the main streets reveals simple buildings that echo the sugar plantation era when the town first took shape.

Both beach parks are within easy walking distance and have different characteristics depending on the season and time of day you visit. The northern beach tends to have stronger waves in winter, while the southern park offers gentler conditions and better access to shade and facilities during warmer months.

The Rainbow Bridge crossing the Anahulu River serves as the main entrance to the old town section and is often overlooked despite being impossible to miss when arriving. This bridge has long marked the gateway for visitors arriving by road or rail.
