Sacred Falls State Park

The park contains the Kaluanui gulch leading to a waterfall, with canyon walls rising vertically to 2,100 feet in height along the trail.

The state acquired the land for 3.5 million dollars in 1976, developing it into a park that received 70,000 visitors during the 1991-1992 fiscal year.

Hawaiian traditions tell of Kamapuaa, the pig demigod, who left marks on the cliff walls while helping his people escape from Chief Olopana's forces.

The park remains permanently closed since 1999 due to a fatal rockfall incident, with violations resulting in fines ranging from 2,500 to 10,000 dollars.

Two canoe-shaped depressions in the cliff walls mark the location where, according to legend, Kamapuaa pressed against the rock face to aid his people.
