Dutch Harbor, Naval port in Unalaska, United States
Dutch Harbor is a harbor settlement on Amaknak Island in Unalaska, Alaska, serving as one of the busiest fishing ports in the United States. The protected waters provide anchorage for dozens of fishing vessels, while processing facilities and warehouses line the waterfront.
Japanese forces attacked the facility in June 1942 by air, marking one of the few hostile military actions on American soil during World War II. The Navy then expanded defenses and constructed numerous bunkers and gun emplacements that remain in place today.
The harbor takes its name from Dutch explorers who sailed these waters in the 18th century and now serves as the economic center of a community where fishing crews from many countries gather during the harvest season. Local residents maintain close ties to Unangan culture, whose influence appears in the architecture of some buildings and in the practices of the community.
The facility connects to Unalaska by a bridge, though strong winds and low visibility can make movement challenging especially during winter months. Visitors should prepare for harsh weather and wear sturdy clothing, as conditions can shift within hours.
Some of the old military bunkers now serve as storage for fishing companies, which house their equipment in the robust concrete structures. The thick walls protect sensitive gear from the extreme weather conditions of the region.
