Mount Akutan

Mount Akutan is a stratovolcano in the Aleutian Islands that rises 1,303 meters above sea level. Its summit features a circular caldera roughly 2 kilometers across with an active cinder cone at its center.

The volcano has experienced multiple eruptions over recorded history. Its most recent significant activity took place in 1992.

The name Akutan originates from the Aleut word hakuta, reflecting the indigenous presence in the Aleutian Islands before European exploration.

The island is remote and difficult to access, studied mainly by scientists from a distance. Visitors should expect harsh terrain and unpredictable weather conditions throughout the year.

A major earthquake swarm in March 1996 visibly shifted the volcano's structure. The eastern slope dropped while the western side rose significantly.
