Anangula Archeological District, Archaeological site on Anangula Island, Aleutians West Census Area, United States.

Anangula Archeological District is located on a 1.5-mile-long island near the western coast of Umnak Island in the Aleutians. The area contains two distinct sites with visible house depressions, stone artifacts, and layers of volcanic material.

The site has roots extending back to around 6400 BCE. Excavations conducted in the 1960s uncovered eight house structures and over 30,000 artifacts, revealing a long history of human occupation.

The site documents early human settlements with stone tools and semi-subterranean houses built by maritime-focused communities. The construction methods and tool types reveal how people adapted to life in the Aleutians.

Visits require advance planning and arrangements due to the remote island location with limited transportation options. Check local access requirements and permits before traveling to this site.

The site features 24 visible house depressions buried beneath layers of ancient volcanic ash. This natural preservation by volcanic material has protected the structures across thousands of years.
