Fisher Caldera

Fisher Caldera, Volcanic caldera on Unimak Island, Alaska, US

Fisher Caldera is a large volcanic depression on Unimak Island in Alaska, formed by ancient volcanic activity. The site contains several crater lakes and distinctive peaks that rise roughly 930 meters above the caldera floor.

The caldera formed roughly 9,100 years ago when a major andesitic stratovolcano erupted violently. Ash flows from this eruption spread extensively across the landscape toward the Pacific Ocean.

The name honors Dr. Bernard Fisher, a geologist who disappeared in 1946 while conducting research near Ship Rock in the Aleutian Islands.

The site is continuously monitored for volcanic activity to protect visitors and nearby communities. It is important to check current conditions and any alerts before planning a visit to this remote location.

The depression contains multiple distinctive peaks including Eickelberg Peak and Mount Finch that rise from its floor. These varied peaks create an interesting layered landscape within the larger caldera structure.
