Access to the wilderness requires permits and specialized transportation, with no maintained trails and temperatures ranging from 24°F to 56°F throughout the year.
The wilderness contains one of the largest eelgrass beds on Earth, supporting 200 wildlife species and the entire global population of black brant geese.
