Mount Dutton

Mount Dutton is a volcano in the Aleutian Islands that rises to about 1500 meters. The mountain features multiple lava dome structures and is covered year-round with snow and ice.

The volcano received its name in 1927 honoring a 19th-century volcanologist. This naming recognized a scientist who contributed significantly to the study of volcanic phenomena.

Fishing communities near the mountain have built their way of life around the sea. People here depend on the waters for work and tradition, making the ocean central to how they live.

The mountain is accessible only by air to nearby communities. From there, visitors need to arrange additional transportation on land or by water to approach the summit area.

The mountain has numerous volcanic vents scattered across its slopes. Strong earthquake activity in the 1980s revealed that the volcano remains geologically active beneath its frozen surface.
