Amak Volcano

Amak Volcano rises 1,601 feet above sea level on its own island, featuring blocky lava flows that extend from its summit to the surrounding flanks.

The volcano recorded three documented eruptions, with two occurring in the 18th century between 1700-1710 and another in 1796, plus prehistoric activity around 3050 BCE.

The Aleutian Islands, where Amak Volcano stands, represent the traditional territories of Alaska Native peoples who developed knowledge of volcanic landscapes.

Access to Amak Volcano requires boat transportation and specific permits, as aircraft landings are prohibited on the island, with Cold Bay serving as the nearest city.

The volcanic composition contains higher concentrations of potash and rare-earth elements compared to other volcanoes in the Aleutian chain.
