Fort Liscum, Military fort in Valdez Bay, Alaska, United States
Fort Liscum was a military installation built with 37 wooden buildings spread along the southern shore of Valdez Bay. The structures included residential quarters, a hospital, storage facilities, and workshops needed for daily operations.
The fort was established in 1900 under the command of Lieutenant Abercrombie as a military base during Alaska's gold rush. It was built to maintain order and security as the territory experienced rapid population growth and development.
The military personnel played a role in connecting remote regions of Alaska through communication networks. Their work helped link newly developed gold mining areas with administrative centers during the territory's expansion period.
The original fort site is not directly accessible today, but the Valdez Museum displays artifacts and cannons from the garrison. Visitors can learn about the military history of the region through exhibits and historical information provided there.
The site of the former military installation later became home to the Alyeska Marine Terminal. This terminal now serves as the northern endpoint of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, handling oil shipments from interior fields.
