Eielson Air Force Base is a military air base in Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska. The facility sits roughly 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Fairbanks and serves as a major operational hub for aerial missions near the Arctic Circle.
The base began in 1943 as Mile 26 Satellite Field, built as a support airfield during World War II. It was renamed in 1948 to honor Carl Ben Eielson, a polar aviator who died during Arctic expeditions.

Access to the base is restricted and requires proper military authorization to enter. Visitors should be prepared for extreme weather, as winter temperatures can drop to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 degrees Celsius).
The base runs training programs in extreme Arctic conditions with temperatures far below freezing. Military personnel test equipment and procedures here that are later used in other cold climates around the world.
