Teatro Isauro Martínez, Opera house in Torreón, Mexico
Teatro Isauro Martínez is an Italian-style theater in Torreón designed to seat 719 people with art deco architecture throughout. The interior features decorative murals by Salvador Tarazona that enhance the refined character of the venue.
The building was designed by Abel Blas Cortinas and opened to the public in March 1930. It served as both a theater and cinema in its early decades before converting to cinema-only operations in 1945.
The name honors a local patron of the arts who championed cultural development in the city. Inside, visitors can observe how the space brings together different art forms, making it a symbol of how the community values creative expression.
The building sits in the city center and is easy to locate and reach on foot. Visitors should check ahead for current programming to plan their visit during an event that interests them.
The building nearly faced demolition in the 1970s, but students from the local university stepped in to prevent its destruction. This rescue effort led to a complete restoration and its transfer to the National Institute of Fine Arts.
