Suraya Mosque, Islamic mosque in Torreón, Mexico.
The Suraya Mosque is a place of worship in Torreón, northern Mexico, featuring a minaret and decorative elements that draw from Islamic and Moorish traditions alongside local building styles. The building stands in a residential area of the city and is easily spotted from the street.
The mosque was completed in 1989, making it the first building in Mexico constructed specifically for Islamic worship. It was built by descendants of Middle Eastern immigrants who had settled in the Torreón area over the previous decades.
The mosque serves as a gathering place for Shia Muslim families in Torreón, where prayers and community events take place regularly. Visitors can notice the Arabic calligraphy and colored tiles on the walls, which reflect the Middle Eastern roots of the families who built it.
The mosque generally welcomes visitors outside of main prayer times, which is when access to all areas is easiest. Modest clothing is expected when entering, as it remains an active place of worship.
Before the mosque was built, around 35 descendants of immigrants began meeting in a makeshift space in 1983, using it as an informal place of prayer. That small group eventually raised enough support to fund and complete the construction six years later.
