Mulegé, Small desert town near Sea of Cortez, Mexico.
Mulegé is a small town in the Baja California Sur desert where the Rio Mulegé flows through the area. The river creates a green oasis with palm trees and mangroves surrounded by dry desert landscape.
The town developed around the Santa Rosalia de Mulegé mission, built by Jesuits between 1754 and 1766. It became the second Jesuit mission established in the Baja California region.
The town's prison operated without bars, allowing inmates to move freely during daylight hours before returning at evening. This unusual approach reflected the community's trust in those held there.
The town is remote and best reached by car along Highway 1. The nearest major airport is roughly 136 kilometers south and offers the best arrival option for visitors from outside the region.
The community earned its "Heroica" designation after successfully resisting foreign military forces during a 19th-century intervention. This moment shaped local identity and continues to be remembered by residents today.
