Chartwell Mansion, French chateau style mansion in Bel Air, Los Angeles, US.
Chartwell Mansion is a residence in the French chateau style located in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. The limestone property measures around 25,000 square feet (2,300 square meters) and includes eleven bedrooms, eighteen bathrooms, and a wine cellar with space for twelve thousand bottles.
Architect Sumner Spaulding designed the property in 1933 on behalf of engineer Lynn Atkinson. The building remained unoccupied at first because Atkinson's wife rejected the property.
The exterior served as the backdrop for the television series The Beverly Hillbillies, which aired between 1962 and 1971. Visitors today recognize the facade and front entrance that appeared in numerous episodes.
The property sits on Bel Air Road on a site of roughly 10 acres (4 hectares) with gardens by Henri Samuel. Several adjacent parcels also belong to the property.
Lachlan Murdoch acquired the property in 2019 for a sum of 150 million dollars. This sale set a record for the highest price of a residential property in California.
