Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome, Historic carousel building on Santa Monica Pier, California, US
The Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome is a carousel building on the Santa Monica Pier that combines Byzantine and Moorish architectural elements with octagonal towers, triangular windows, and a central cupola. Inside, a mechanical carousel with hand-carved wooden horses invites visitors to ride.
The building was constructed in 1916 by Charles Looff and initially housed his custom-made carousel until 1939 when a different carousel was installed. This change marked a shift in the pier's role as a hub for popular entertainment.
The building reflects early 20th-century amusement culture and has appeared in several films, including a 1973 drama. The architecture shows how people spent their leisure time and what role entertainment venues held in the community.
The building is easily accessible on foot from the beach via the pier and the carousel operates year-round. Visitors should arrive early to avoid crowds, especially on weekends and during summer months.
The upper floor of the Hippodrome contains former apartments that now serve as city offices. This practical adaptation of historic spaces shows how the building has evolved to meet modern needs.
