Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome, Historic carousel building on Santa Monica Pier, California, US
The Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome features Byzantine and Moorish architectural elements with octagonal towers, triangular windows, and a central cupola on the pier.
Built in 1916 by Charles Looff, the Hippodrome initially housed his custom-made carousel until 1939 when it was replaced by Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel 62.
The structure represents early 20th-century entertainment architecture and appears in multiple films, including the 1973 production of The Sting.
The carousel operates daily inside the Hippodrome building, featuring 44 hand-carved wooden horses that underwent complete restoration in 1990.
The second floor of the Hippodrome contains a series of former residential apartments that now serve as municipal offices for Santa Monica.
