Caltrans District 7 Headquarters, Government office building in downtown Los Angeles, US
Caltrans District 7 Headquarters is a 13-story government office building in downtown Los Angeles that occupies an entire city block with an L-shaped form composed of two distinct masses. The structure opens onto Main Street between First and Second streets and features multiple interior functions including office areas, meeting spaces, and public amenities.
The building was completed in 2004 as the first project under California's Design Excellence Program. It resulted from collaboration between architecture firm Morphosis and construction company Clark Construction Group.
The building displays several art installations, including Motordom by Keith Sonnier, which adorns the outdoor lobby with lights that evoke highway traffic. These works shape how visitors and workers experience the space daily.
The building is easily accessible and offers various areas including conference facilities, exhibition spaces, and a cafeteria for visitors. Modern skip-stop elevators provide efficient access to the different floors throughout the structure.
The exterior features mechanical aluminum panels that automatically adjust to sunlight, optimizing energy use and temperature control. Solar cells on the south-facing wall generate electricity to power the facility.
