Angels Flight, Historical funicular railway in Bunker Hill, Los Angeles, United States
Angels Flight is a short funicular railway in Beaux-Arts style linking Hill Street with Grand Avenue in Bunker Hill. The two orange and black wooden cabins move on parallel tracks in opposite directions, covering a steep route.
The railway opened in 1901 as Los Angeles Incline Railway, connecting the growing city with residential neighborhoods on the hill. After 68 years of operation, it closed in 1969 due to Bunker Hill redevelopment and was later rebuilt at a new location.
The two cars carry biblical names that reflect the original intention to connect the business district with residential areas above. Visitors today can experience the short ride in the wooden cabins while hearing the characteristic creaking of the old mechanism.
The railway operates daily and offers a short but steep connection between two street levels in the city center. Visitors should note that the cabins are small and waiting times may occur during busy periods.
The structure appears in over one hundred films and television productions, making it one of the most filmed modes of transport in the world. The railway has been relocated several times and now stands about half a block south of its original site.
