Mar Vista Gardens is a residential community with 601 apartments spread across 62 buildings along Ballona Creek in southwestern Los Angeles. The grounds include open spaces with community gardens, athletic fields, handball courts, and a gymnasium for residents to use.
The community was built in 1954 on a former celery field, designed by architect Albert Criz following the Federal Housing Act of 1949. This transformation converted unused agricultural land into a functioning residential neighborhood.
The community center serves as a gathering place where residents participate in classes, health services, and social events throughout the year. This role reflects the importance of shared spaces in supporting the neighborhood's diverse population.
