This congressional district covers the South Bay area of Los Angeles County and includes Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Gardena, Compton, and sections of Torrance and the city itself. The territory lies between the Pacific coast and the central urban core, taking in residential blocks and commercial zones with different characteristics.
The district was established in 1973 and originally covered Imperial, Riverside, and inland parts of San Diego County further east. After the 2010 census, the boundaries shifted to the current location in southern Los Angeles to reflect changes in population distribution.
The district population reflects substantial diversity with 57.2% Hispanic, 23.8% Black, 8.3% Asian, 6.9% White, and 2.6% mixed heritage residents.
Voters can verify their alignment with the district and locate their representative by entering their home address on official government websites. Constituent offices in the larger towns also provide support for questions about representation and federal matters.
Democratic Representative Maxine Waters has represented this district since 2013, continuing her earlier service from the former 35th district.
