The cross-shaped church features thirty-foot-high walls constructed with adobe and brick, incorporating both Baroque and Classical architectural elements in its design.
Established in 1798 by Father Fermín de Lasuén, the mission became the eighteenth of twenty-one Spanish missions built throughout Alta California.
The mission complex includes historical exhibits, original artwork, and documented accounts from Pablo Tac, offering perspectives on indigenous life during mission times.
Visitors can explore the museum, gardens, cemetery, and restored buildings daily, with guided tours available in multiple languages throughout the week.
The mission managed over 950,400 acres of land and supported 26,000 heads of livestock, making it the largest agricultural operation in California during its peak.
