Valerie Jean Dates
Valerie Jean Dates is a historic date palm orchard in Riverside County, California, near the town of Thermal. The property consists of tall trees with clusters of fruit hanging from branches, situated on dry, open land with simple pathways running between the rows.
The orchard was founded in 1928 by Russell Charles Nicoll and was among the first to sell dates directly to customers from the farm. In 1991, the site was recognized by the California Office of Historic Preservation as a historic location.
The orchard became a stopping point for travelers passing through the desert region and shaped local memory of early farming ventures. The date palms stand today as a symbol of how pioneering farmers changed the way dates were sold and enjoyed.
The site is best visited during harvest season in late fall when activity on the grounds is most visible. Visitors should prepare for the sunny, dry desert conditions and wear comfortable shoes for walking on simple pathways.
The orchard was among the first places to send dates through the mail, allowing customers from distant places to order and receive boxes of fruit. The owners created specialized products like dates stuffed with coconut or almonds, and invented a date milkshake.
