Shields Date Gardens

Shields Date Gardens is a date palm orchard and agricultural center in Indio, California, featuring multiple date palm varieties arranged in cultivated rows across the property. The plantation demonstrates how these fruits thrive in the desert environment of the Coachella Valley.

The orchard was founded in 1924 by Floyd and Bess Shields and brought specialized date varieties and new growing methods to the Coachella Valley. The family developed innovative techniques that transformed date farming in the region.

The theater on the grounds shows films about how dates grow and how farmers work with these fruits.

An on-site shop sells fresh dates and date-based products during regular hours year-round. The location is easy to reach and explore, with staff happy to answer questions about the plants and fruits.

The plantation developed two date varieties through specialized breeding programs that exist nowhere else in the world. These exclusive varieties result from decades of experimentation with different palm types.
