Forever Marilyn, Giant sculpture in Palm Springs, California
Forever Marilyn is a 26-foot aluminum sculpture in Palm Springs showing Marilyn Monroe in a white dress lifted by the wind. The figure stands on a solid base near the art museum and weighs more than 34,000 pounds.
The sculpture was created in 2011 by sculptor John Seward Johnson II and first appeared in Chicago. It returned to Palm Springs in 2021 after traveling through several cities in North America and Australia.
The figure shows a film scene from 1955 in which Monroe stands over a subway grate as her skirt lifts in the air. Visitors gather beneath the sculpture to take photographs from unexpected angles.
The sculpture stands freely on the sidewalk near the art museum on Museum Way and is accessible at all times. Visitors often gather here for photographs during the day, especially in late morning and early afternoon.
The figure was originally part of a traveling exhibition and spent several years in different countries before being permanently installed. Its height makes it one of the largest sculptures depicting Marilyn Monroe.
