Palm Springs Art Museum, Modern art museum in Palm Springs, United States
The Palm Springs Art Museum is an art museum in downtown Palm Springs, California, displaying paintings, glass art, photography, and Native American objects. The collection spans three floors and covers both contemporary works and pieces from earlier periods.
The museum was founded in 1938 as a natural history museum and shifted its focus toward art in the 1950s after receiving major donations of artworks. That change set the direction the institution has followed ever since.
The museum gives a notable amount of space to glass art, showing works that many visitors do not expect to find in a desert city. Alongside these, objects from Native American communities are displayed as part of the permanent collection, not as a separate afterthought.
The museum is open on select days of the week, and on Thursday evenings entry is free of charge for all visitors. Arriving early on that evening is a good idea, as the galleries can fill up.
The museum runs a separate center called the Architecture and Design Center, housed inside a former bank building a short walk away. This center focuses on the desert modern style that shaped much of the city's built look in the mid-20th century.
