Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Riverside County, United States
The refuge spans 3,709 acres of protected desert terrain within the Coachella Valley Preserve and Indio Hills Palms State Reserve in California.
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service established this refuge in 1985 to safeguard the critical habitat of endangered desert species.
Scientists and researchers conduct studies at the refuge to understand the behavior and needs of the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard population.
Visitors can access the designated horseback riding trail by taking Interstate 10 to the Cook Street exit near School Chase Road.
The refuge contains specialized dune systems that serve as the principal habitat for the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard, found nowhere else on Earth.
