Tahquitz Canyon, Sacred canyon in Palm Springs, United States

Tahquitz Canyon is a mountain valley in Palm Springs with a roughly 3-mile trail leading to an 18-foot waterfall, passing through sandy areas and plants typical of the San Jacinto Mountains. The path travels through different habitats where you can observe rock formations and other natural structures shaped over time.

This valley was home to the Cahuilla people for at least 5,000 years and holds evidence of their settlements in the form of tools and pottery. Excavations between 1988 and 1994 uncovered many artifacts that revealed how long the Cahuilla had used and lived in this area.

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians manages this place and maintains ancient rock carvings and historic irrigation systems that visitors can still see today. These features show how closely the Cahuilla people have always been connected to this land.

A visitor center offers guided tours and information about trail conditions, operating regularly from October through July with adjusted hours in summer months. Planning your visit in advance and checking current conditions before you go helps you prepare properly, especially if traveling during the warmer season.

A rare mountain frog species was brought back to the creek in 2010 to restore the natural environment and protect this vulnerable animal. This reintroduction shows modern efforts to preserve nature at this historic site.
