The dam was built in 1895 and initially held the record as the world's largest solid masonry dam until 1911. This early engineering achievement shaped water management in the region.
The reservoir appeared in the CBS television series Airwolf during the 1980s, featuring scenes of a character residing in a lakeside cabin.
