Hemet is a city in the San Jacinto Valley of southern California, located in Riverside County about 60 miles (97 km) east of Los Angeles. The community sits at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, surrounded by desert landscape and mountain views.
The settlement officially became a city on January 20, 1910, after local residents voted on the matter. Before incorporation, the area developed as an agricultural center in the late 19th century.
The Ramona Pageant, recognized as California's official outdoor play, takes place in Hemet and presents stories from the Spanish colonial period.
The city is accessible via California State Route 74 and Florida Avenue, which run through the center as main roads. The climate is dry and hot in summer, mild in winter, making visits possible year-round.
In the 1940s, the Ryan School of Aeronautics operated here, training thousands of military pilots during wartime. The site later became the local regional airport.
