Area code 909, Telephone prefix in Inland Empire region, California, US
Area code 909 is a telephone prefix in the Inland Empire of southern California, covering cities such as Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, San Bernardino, Upland and Chino. The prefix extends primarily across San Bernardino County and portions of Los Angeles County east of the metropolitan region.
The prefix came into effect in 1992 through a split from the previous 714 code to meet growing demand for telephone numbers in the Inland Empire. Its introduction reflected the rapid population growth and economic development of the region east of Los Angeles.
The telephone area encompasses multiple educational institutions, including Claremont Colleges and California State University San Bernardino, connecting academic communities across the region.
Anyone calling within this region must dial all ten digits, even for calls within the same town. This rule applies since the introduction of the additional 840 code in 2021 for all local connections.
The code covers an area with more than four million residents, making it one of the most populated prefix zones in California outside the large coastal cities. Because of continued expansion, the zone received the new overlapping 840 code in 2021, requiring ten-digit dialing even for local calls.
