Idyllwild-Pine Cove, Mountain community in Riverside County, United States.
Idyllwild-Pine Cove sits at 1,650 meters (5,413 feet) elevation in the San Jacinto Mountains and includes three separate residential areas surrounded by wilderness and granite formations. The community stretches along winding mountain roads lined with timber houses beneath tall pines and cedars.
The area transformed from a Cahuilla summer settlement into a sawmill camp when George and Sarah Hannahs founded Camp Idyllwilde in 1889. Artists and musicians moved here starting in the 1950s, shaping it into a retreat for creative communities.
The Idyllwild Arts Foundation runs year-round programs with a residential arts high school and summer workshops for music, theater, and visual arts. Local galleries display works by resident artists in timber buildings along the main street.
Visitors can access numerous hiking trails, including segments of the Pacific Crest Trail, with parking areas and trail maps available at ranger stations. Snow may occur from November through April, and summer brings cooler temperatures than the valley below due to the elevation and tree shade.
Rock climbers developed the Yosemite Decimal System at Tahquitz Peak, which became the foundation for modern climbing difficulty ratings worldwide. The granite rock has been a historic climbing site for alpinists ever since.
