Joshua Tree is a community in the California high desert at an elevation of around 2,700 feet (834 meters). Housing, studios, and small businesses spread across a wide area between the dry hillsides.
The community grew from the 1970s onward as a home for people seeking a quiet desert life. Proximity to the national park shaped local development strongly.

The visitor center on Park Boulevard provides maps and guidance for exploring the surrounding area. Roads and trails lead from the town center toward nearby desert zones and hiking routes.
