Giant Rock, Natural boulder formation in Mojave Desert, California, US.
Giant Rock is a freestanding granite boulder in the California Mojave Desert that rises several stories high. Its light brown surface shows cracks and weathering, while the ground around it consists of sand and low scrub.
A prospector dug out a room beneath the boulder in the 1930s and lived there for several years. In the 1950s, thousands of visitors came to gatherings organized nearby.
Native groups have visited the boulder for centuries to hold ceremonies and meditations that still take place in the surrounding area. The name refers to its extraordinary size, which travelers can spot from a distance.
Access requires unpaved roads that need a vehicle with enough clearance. Water and sun protection are necessary, as there are no facilities in the area.
In 2000, the boulder split into two sections, revealing a bright interior layer that was previously hidden. This crack runs for several meters and remains clearly visible today.
