Casa Grande is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, located in the desert between Phoenix and Tucson. The urban area spreads across a wide, flat landscape with scattered hills and dry vegetation in the background.
The Southern Pacific railway company established a junction in 1879, initially called Terminus and renamed the same year. In the following decades the settlement grew mainly through agriculture and trade along the line.
The name comes from Spanish and refers to nearby ruins from pre-colonial times. Many streets show typical features of a settlement that grew along the railway, with residential neighborhoods on both sides of the tracks.
The summer months reach very high temperatures, so a visit between fall and spring is worthwhile. Those traveling by car will find shops and facilities along the main roads that are easy to reach.
During the Cold War the area served as a test range for the development of aerial cameras. Concrete markers on the ground were used to check and calibrate the accuracy of photographic captures from the air.
