La Campana Hill, Central viewpoint in Hermosillo, Mexico
La Campana Hill is a rocky hill in central Hermosillo, rising above the city and offering views in all directions. The summit holds a viewpoint, and several paths wind up through the exposed rock to reach it.
In 1909, an observation point was built on the summit, making the hill a recognized gathering spot for the city. It has since remained one of the most familiar landmarks in Hermosillo.
The hill takes its name from the bell-like sound that phonolite rocks produce when they knock against each other on its surface. Visitors can test this themselves by gently tapping two of the loose stones together.
The climb starts from Cucurpe Street, and you can choose from several routes up to the top. Going early in the morning or late in the afternoon is more comfortable, especially during the hot summer months.
Phonolite is a rare volcanic rock known for its metallic ring, and outcrops within a city are uncommon anywhere in the world. The hill sits directly within the urban fabric of Hermosillo, making this geological feature easy to reach for any visitor.
